the Union. I watched last night’s address with interest - after all, much of what is decided in Washington trickles down to ‘us little folk’ who end up bearing the brunt of the laws, regulations and visions that are concocted in D.C.
One topic was of particular interest to me (and I am sure to my fellow Texans) - that of immigration, illegal and otherwise. President Obama made a statement that requires some further examination. He offered that illegal border crossings are down over the last (few?) years. While I myself am not surprised to hear this - I think we have different points of view concerning the cause of this occurrence. He seems to think it is due to stricter enforcement.
I think illegal border crossings may be down (if this is indeed true) because the United States is no longer the land of milk and honey. Nope, we have hit upon hard times here - and nearly everyone is feeling it. The bottom is falling out of our staid middle class and many have tumbled into poverty. That’s certainly not a ’selling point’ for the country - and as an advertisement for travel and resettling - well it has quite the opposite effect.
I am an optimist myself - and a true believer in this country in which I was born. But I realize we are facing more difficult times ahead - and it would serve us well to begin by stating the truth about the difficulties that lie ahead - and what we must do to overcome them.
No kidding - ourselves or others.
