The United States is polarized along the issues of immigration reform. On the one hand, some say that we should enforce existing immigration laws and not reward those who came here illegally. On the other hand, some want to give illegal aliens a blanket amnesty similar to the one instituted in the eighties. There are approximately 12 million illegals in the country according to journalists. We certainly can not deport all of them.
No one disagrees that we have to get control of our immigration system. However, people would not come to the United States if they were not needed. The issue is how do we regulate who gets to come into the United States.
What we need to do is give those who came here illegally work authorization as long as they can show that they have no criminal record. In exchange, we must institute strict rules to discourage future illegal immigrants from crossing the border. If they can not obtain employment in the United States, they will simply stop coming to the United States. This is a compromise. The compromise is that we all recognize that we must stop illegal immigration, but we must also deal responsibly and humanely with the immigrants who are already in the United States.
