Houston Drinking and Driving - a Deadly Combination

Houston is one of the most notorious counties in the country for drunk driving arrests, accidents and vehicle fatalities. Just last year a city official commented that drunk driving in this municipality has reached pandemic proportions.  Consider the following statistics:

There are over 10,000 DWI citations issued annually in Harris County alone. One need not be a math whiz to do some calculations with this number that drive home how astounding this figure is. It means that on an average day in the Houston area between 200 and 300 automobiles are stopped and the driver is detained because he or she is too incapacitated to safely navigate his or her automobile on public roadways. They are a menace and potential drunk driving accidents waiting to happen.

A second statistic that is equally disturbing is the fact that nearly 60% of traffic fatalities on Houston roadways are alcohol-related. This is double the number of alcohol-related fatalities in like-size cities and counties in the United States and there seems to be no end in sight or even an effective deterrent.

The usual legal responses are fines and jail time or probation with community service. Occasionally offenders are sent to rehabilitation programs to help fight their alcohol addiction. However, none of these are adequate punishments when a person loses a love one in a drunk driving accident. In other words, no amount of money or sense of guilt on behalf of the perpetrator will make the victim whole again.  On behalf of all those families who have lost loved ones in alcohol fueled wrecks - don’t drink and drive.
