Domestic violence - what it is and what to do

The incidence of domestic violence is reaching epidemic proportions - both on a local as well as national level. Also known as spousal abuse, child abuse or - the more recent term - intimate partner violence (IPV) - it is most often (but not always) a violent act by a man perpetrated on a woman.

Nevertheless, it also broadly encompasses violence committed by one member of a family on another. Moreover, acts of emotional and psychological abuse fall under its sweeping label. It is surprising to note that statistics on the prevalence of domestic abuse are difficult to pin down.  National reports place the number in the millions each year. Tens of thousands in Houston alone are annually counted as victims. Then, of course, one must remember that many suffer in silence - either too afraid or too ashamed to admit their plight.

The following advice is offered to those embroiled in a domestic violence situation:

First, call 911. Get police intervention as quickly as possible.

Next, seek medical attention for any and all injuries no matter how slight. Domestic violence tends to escalate with each episode. Too, document all injuries with pictures and keep a copy of the police report for your records.

Now, do not return to the scene of abuse but seek out a safe, secure shelter.

Finally, create a safety plan and a support network of people on whom you can count for help. File a Personal Protective Order with the courts as a first step towards keeping the abusive partner away. Then seek legal counsel. A reputable attorney will be able to navigate your case through the legal system - offering you expert advise and support.
