Judge Orders Couple to Wear Sign Stating “I am a Thief”

After stealing over $250,000 from a crime victim’s fund, a Texas couple is getting 10 years probation along with some unusual penance.  State District Judge Kevin Fine has ordered that Daniel and Eloise Mireles, who have been convicted of stealing money orders and cashier’s checks from the Harris County Texas victim’s fund, pay back the money within 10 years.  He has also ordered the unusual punishment of ordering the Mireles’ to wear signs reading, “I am a thief. I stole $255,000 from a crime victim’s fund,” for five hours every weekend at a designated street corner.  They are also required to display a sign in front of their home that reads, “The occupants of this residence are convicted thieves. They stole $250,000 from the Harris County Crime Victim’s Fund. Signed, Judge Kevin Fine.”  In addition, they will each be spending six months behind bars.
