Houston police fingerprint unit funded for another year

According to the Associated Press,  the Houston City Council approved an additional $2.3 million for the Houston police fingerprint unit.  These funds will enable the unit to remain in operation for another year.  In 2009, the lab came under scrutiny when it was found that some examiners had missed usable prints on evidence.  After the audit that revealed the missed prints, a review of fingerprint evidence in violent crime cases was done.  There were no wrong suspect identifications found in the cases reviewed, from 2004 to 2009.  The contract with the Mississippi based consulting firm Ron Smith and Associates has been extended until next June.
